I think it is not possible to say theoretically, how my mind would react when practically facing the situation. There is a desire to help and also ability....... yet we would only help when we are convinced that help indeed is called for. It could well be an excuse merely for begging.
I believe that all of us are inconsistent in our reaction to such situations........ sometimes we believe and help out and some other times we can not believe and hence find a way not to help. And it is this inconsistency that makes us what we are and human relations the most complex puzzle.

Sorry but I would have told him to hit the road, because if he had just came from the hospitial then he could of had someone ask for a ride or they would have called him a cab.
I just would not have answered the door because it was 3:30 in the morning and any normal person would be sleeping. Let him bang on someone elses door in the early morning.

I tell everyone to beat it. I can't stand that crap, people begging for handouts. My car broke down at the gas station a few days ago and some guy asked me for a ride. I'm like, "yeah, does this LOOK like a working car to you?"

It need very keen perception, experience, knowledge and also wisdom to be able to judge if the case is genuine. This is just to minimise the chances that we are instead taken for a ride. Otherwise, if situation permits, it is right thing to oblige according to one's capacity.

Um the police would have helped him... you should have suggested through the door that you were calling them to assist him. There have been many scams like this including some with Pregnant women!

I would tell him to call police for help and you could call them for him. Do not open your door!!! and do call the police!!
It has nothing to do with good in the world or not. It has to do with your personal safety and that of your family. Why did he pick your door?

No, I wouldn't help him. I work for the police department and I've seen way too many horrible things happen to godd samaritans.
It's sad, but that's the way it is.

Depending on his osture try to evaluate his credibility and then choose from there. If he is telling the truth ofcourse, if nt then politely decline.
