In 2005 Money Magazine picked New Jersey as the richest state.
Also they picked "Moorestown" New Jersey as the no 1 place to live in the USA as well. And this was based on per capita income.
NJ gets picked on but it is one of the wealthiest states in the USA.

California has the largest economy in the United States. If California were a country it would be the 7th richest country in the world. That is, of course, if you mean GDP rather than per capita income. Per capita it usually varies year by year between small European, developed countries like Sweden, Switzerland and Luxemburg.
