it could be a dead drive that needs replaced. the dvd and cd reading heads are seperate, so it is possible for one to be working and not the other, and if you use the cd head more than the dvd, it isn't a stretch for it to be the one to give out first.
try a cleaning kit. if that doesn't work, you'll probably need to replace it.

Is it a new unit or have you removed any programs lately ? If not then I would suspect your Audio CODECS are missing or corrupt, If you have a namebrand like HP or DELL laptop, I would go to manufacturers website and search for new DVD/CD-ROM drivers, as easiest,, now, you might also try going to start>accessories>systemtools>systeminformation> and scroll down thru that bundle of information, click the left column to find a certain part (ie: software) and the subcatagories will come up and you may be able to find it there as well as to what the problem is,

most likely the cds are not in the right format..perhaps theyre programs that windows cant read without the right decoder
