Well Maggie, there is an old and trusted way to clean the face of your iron. Firstly let it cool down a bit and then with a little household soap and sponge ,lightly rub till all the dirt is off. Then get an old candle and rub the wax on the face and take off the surplus by rubbing the iron on a brown paper bag. Works every time.

The previous answer to try Lakeland is good. Or go to an old-fashioned high street electrical shop. Or Rowenta do a little stick for cleaning irons - but it is way over priced, and gives off horrible caustic fumes, as you have to put it on the hot plate like using a lipstick. Or do as I did - chuck your daft iron that needs cleaning all the time and probably leaves stains on shirts and get a Tefal iron. It has a special face plate (I don't work for Tefal!). It's one of those things that when you've tried it , you wonder why everyone doesn't know about it. Plus get a Tefal iron with a separate water container. Well worth the money.

Turn the iron on but have it on low heat and get a thick wash cloth and wet it with cold water and wipe it on the face of the iron

You're right, you used to be able to buy iron cleaner in virtually any hardware shop, supermarket or even Woolworths. I searched for ages to find something and eventually discovered that Lakeland do one.

I use a Brillo pad or a scouring pad with some Ajax or similar cleaning cream. The wire element of the pad with the Brillo does the job and a scouring pad is equally as good. You may need a bit of elbow grease but it works.

Turn it on for awhile and when its hot turn it off, as soon as it starts to cool, apply any scouring powder or toothpaste(believe me it works) and use a moderately hard sponge(so it doesn't eat the real surface). then clean with a napkin(clean)
