Why do the press take such an avid interest in Katie Couric's role in the media? All the trade newspapers and websites (like imdb.com) constantly scrutinise and analyse her viewing statistics, debate her presentation style and discuss her role in the media.

In the UK, being a newsreader is nothing special - you're not a 'celebrity' as such. So, why is the role of newsanchor in the USA such a big deal? Why are so many press columns devoted to her - it's just reading the news, surely?

The big deal is that she is the first, solo, female to anchor the 6:00 news on a major network.

Also, anchors do a lot more than "read" the news - they write the news that they read. Most anchors also write & produce documentaries re subjects of national or international importance. For instance, Peter Jennings wrote/produced a documentary about the genocide of Serbians and Tom Brokaw about WWII vets, the "Silent Generation." He also wrote a book of that title.

I imagine you can come up with similar stories written by your news people as well.

Back to Katie Couric. She was on the Today show for many, many years. Her viewers came to know her well so that when tragedy struck it seemed as though it happened to a good friend. She didn't become a news item herself until her husband died and, a short time later, her sister. Viewers who knew her were happy to see it when she reached the point that she felt she could begin dating. I guess once the tabloids & magazines become interested in a person they remain interested plus many people simply want to know how & what she's doing. It's not a matter of "idolizing" her or any other newspersons because we usually don't know most anchors on such a personal basis.

News presenters have always been held up in the US to a level of higher esteem than perhaps one would think they should.

Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, and many others... all of us remember where we were when they announced important stories... this brings them closer to us on a personal level. We feel closer to them because they bring us important news that is often difficult to hear... so we imagine it is difficult for them to tell it, and it often is...

Now, in the case of Katie Couric... the public has really gone one step further. Interest in her family life, her time OFF screen... takes it to a level that the news "men" of old never really knew. And there is a second factor.... Couric, being female, breaks the "old boys" club up a certain amount. Yes, I know there have been other female presenters, but she is likely the most prominent one of the present day. She also seems to appear on the cover of alot of women's magazines... this no doubt generates interest in her private life.

I must admit, I am not a "fan" of hers. I don't watch morning news alot... and I don't watch evening news alot either. I get most of my news online... and perhaps that has an effect too... people are starting to get news online more and more... could this be the beginning of the end for the human news presenter?

Bush sounded like Sarah because Bush is an idiot too. He won because his extremely powerful family stole the election in Florida. That's fact- It's also fact that Bush did not win the popular vote. Bush was placed in the White House by his powerful family. He is an idiot. His history is absolutely scattered with unethical downright idiotic immature behavior. He was a failing student- a cokehead- a drunk driver- with an arrest record. His only businesses which he bought with his father's money- he ran into the ground. Again, this is fact. Like he did with the US. Do we really want to elect another idiot into office? Can we afford that? Can you as an individual afford another 4 years of spiraling downward?

I guess that 6 o'clock night news spot is pretty big deal here in US. She's the first woman to host 6:00pm news on major network. It's just that people here worship those news anchors who does 6 oclock news at ABC, CBS, NBC. People like Brian Williams, Tom Bracaw who retired and others.

THe US doesn't think she's that big a deal here........it's only that she recently switched jobs here in the US to another network.
We don't look at her as a celebrity.
Personally speaking.....I really don't care for her. And perhaps there was too much hype made about her....but that's what the press does.
