Had the Americans and British been the ones to reach the chancellery were Hitlers bunker was located first, he probably would not have killed himself. But the Russians beat them there.
Hitler was afraid of what the Russians would do to him if they captured him. And considering what he did to a lot of Russians, both soldiers and civilians, he was probably right to worry. Hitler did not want to have to stand trial for war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Especially in Russia.

He was the number one torturer, when his defeat was near at hand, he could not stand to have the same fate of the people he gassed up, so he committed suicide.

Hitler was mentally ill as the result of syphillis. At the time his whole world was collapsing around him and he would soon be captured or killed. In his twisted view of the world it was the only way out.

personally, i think he did it for a couple reasons. 1. he had a big ego. getting captured/defeated was not in his realm of thinking. 2. he was scared of what would have happened to him. 3.he was too egotistical to give anyone the chance to bring him in and place him on trial.
