**Learn to translate English into mathematical notation and vice versa. This is very helpful in solving story problems and figuring out why a theorem is true.
**Master the basics. If you can add, you can subtract; if you can find the square of a number you can find the square root. Understand the distributive property and the important theorems of what you're studying.
**If you run into a problem that you can't solve easily, think about a problem you can solve that is similar to it. Usually when you're learning math from a textbook, you can find examples to help.
The way mathematicians solve problems usually starts with trial-and-error. With examples and practice, they learn rules that they can use as shortcuts. They then use these theorems and postulates to solve more complex problems. Learning math uses the same concept - start with the basics and learn little tricks along the way to make things quicker.

understand the concepts. make sure you internalize them. you also have to practice a lot and you'll discover a lot of techniques especially if you try different solutions for a certain problem.
