in years gone by before buttons were invented, people used laces to tie their clothes together,ie,two laces attatched to a garment , pull together and tie in a bow.eventually the eyelet was invented and the lace was threaded through the eyelet etc. etc.the eyelet eventually became the button hole when buttons were invented.button holes first, buttons second.

The button had to be made first, the button hole would not exist without a button- it would simply be a hole.

i would have thought that the button must have been made first because you dont always need a buttonhole to fasten it

Buttons and button-like objects used as ornaments rather than fasteners have been discovered in the ancient Indus Valley during its Kot Diji phase (circa 2800-2600 BC) and Bronze Age sites in China (circa 2000-1500 BC), and are attested in Ancient Rome. Functional buttons for clothing became widespread with the rise of snug-fitting clothing in 13th- and 14th-century Europe.

I would have thought it would have been the button `cos buttons didn`t always go in holes. They had loops on them like duffle coats in Elizabethan? times, or before.
