Well failures are the stepping stones to success aren't they? When you try and fail at least you know that you tried. If not 10 years down the road you might ask "Why didn't I even try?". Can you live with the regret? And how do you know a small miracle will never happen?

Unfortunately, your question is too vague, because a good answer is dependent on the situation.

I'll elaborate. Are you trying to rob a bank, and you know you can't make it? Then stop right there; the try isn't worth the consequences. I'm going to assume you're not referring to anything illegal.

Are you talking about asking someone out? In this case, trying might be worth it because the sooner you know that someone's interested in you, the better. It can either result in something positive or give you closure on the matter. It also makes you stronger as a person, because what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger.

Are you talking about accomplishing some sort of task, like going to some college or university? In this case, you're mistaken if you know you can't make it; in these types of cases you have to learn to think positive.

If it's some other issue not stated, I apologize, but it's difficult to go on something so vague.

We learn from everything we do. When we challenge ourselves to do something difficult, we are often surprised at what we know or don't know and that can encourage us to improve in some way. We also gain respect for those who can do these difficult things when we see the skill, talent, education, and patience it takes.
And now and then, we discover we CAN do what we thought we couldn't. Or at least we're moving forward. And that feels good.
Success is usually incremental, so we have to take those first baby steps. Watch a baby learn to walk. She isn't worried about winning a marathon.
