I wish they did... but only for those who can be helped... too many homeless people have mental illnesses and cannot really be simply housed... many of them would actually need assisted care.

I think a socialist state would be the best thing for the homeless but I don't know what the costs would be. In a way I'd rather do this than fund a war that I always thought stunk.

For those people who are homeless just due to hard times I think the government needs to do some proactive program of some sort.

Right now it's just up to charity... maybe the government should step in. But whoever has these programs and systems and everything would be getting the government contracts NOT the defense contractors. So it would be a cost to those programs.

Most homeless are that way for a reason, they would just like a place to pitch their tent free from government harassment. Best provide a large rural area where people can live in poverty with some degree of dignity instead of forcing "government programs" on them.

probably not a bad idea, but for those that are homeless, and unable to work they would need to get into social service programs, and also those living in these homes I'm sure would also have to be drug, and alcohol free just like when they show up at a shelter. So that would probably cause problems

they have things like habitate for humanity. The government has come up with special programs during tough times to help people get through. You would have to have licensed plumbers electricians and so fourth to build a house that passed inspection. I 'm not sure how that would work out.

The fact of the matter is that most homeless people are that way for a reason.

Generally it is a substance abuse problem or mental illness. Concentrate on helping those who want to fix themselves. There is not much we can do for the rest.

You post a good question. A response to this question however is rather tricky. The government's role(in America) should be limited in its assistance to the needy. Instead of taking on the role itself, the government has allowed for the people to build organizations that are intended to be protected from tax burdens in order to allow people such as yourself to organize relief efforts in your own way. This allows people the ability to utilize their own individual skills and also allows for the community to provide services that are more specific to the needs of the area as opposed to trying to cover the entire nation in one blanket program. The not-for-profit organization called Habitat for Humanity was somewhat based on your question. And although it neglected to address some of the inherent difficulties in obtaining housing in my area it may be exactly what your area needs. I would encourage you to investigate that organization and if you see that it does not warrant your contribution feel free to contact me personally and I will try to guide you in the process of setting up a not-for-profit organization with you.

Overall programs such as "food stamps" and Habitat for Humanity have shown that localized not-for-profit organizations can better satisfy the needs of your community better than 538 men/women in congress guessing at what might help in your region.

yes it would be much wiser than spending our money on a war, since we neglect the home front we can not afford to help others or invade them
