digesting food uses a lot of energy, and because sleep is the time that our body replenishes itself, the metabolism slows down.
also, breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it tells the body that the fast is over. food starts the metabolism back up again, to burn up calories. if you dont eat breakfast, all the food that you eat later will be stored as fat. if the body is deprived of food (or believes it is), it stores a more than normal amount of fat as to sustain itself (that's why skipping breakfast isn't good for weight loss).
so if you eat really soon before sleep, the food will be stored in your stomach, making you not hungry in the morning, making your body store more fat all through the day.

Don’t go to bed hungry or full. Hunger and indigestion hinder sleep. Big dinners make you temporarily drowsy but prolong digestion, which interferes with a good night's sleep. It's best to eat your biggest meal before midafternoon and have a light evening meal of 500 calories or less. Include some chicken, extra-lean meat or fish at dinner to help curb middle-of-the-night snack attacks.

you don't gain weight that way specificly. its kind of a bad habit. for one, it can give you nightmares to have your stomach digesting food while you're sleeping. But also, there is no physical reason to eat right before you go to sleep. you don't need the energy the food provides. And some say that they tend to eat junk food before bed, so they just cut out food altogether before bed. but if you want to eat carrots before bed, or some fruit as a snack, thats really just fine.

you do not burn any calories and that is one of the main reasons why we have weight gain. its also always better to eat before 6p.m because you don't burn calories as much and after you eat it is always proper to take a walk after dinner it helps digestion.

Sounds like a load of old hoop to me - whatever you do, it comes down to calories in < calories expended, you lose weight, calories in > calories expended, you gain it.
