It's fairly obvious and easy to observe once you make the leap from how you've been raised/forced to believe. Boats go down on the ocean, mountains rise up as you near them, etc.

The classic greeks (2400 years ago) are known to be the first to know the Earth was round. The diameter of the Earth is around 12000 km (7500 miles) and they were only couple of 100 miles off it. They used two deep holes in the earth (used for gaining water) that were about 1000 miles away and observed the Sun shining directly down to the bottom of the hole to estimate the diameter of the Earth.

Since then, people knew the Earth was round too, although they made up fanciful stories to tell their children.

Magellan proved the earth was round when he led an expedition that circumnavigated the globe in 1519-1521 AD.

In Galileo's time, he was thought of as eccentric when he said earth was round: later when Coppernicus more authentically said the same thing it was accepted! (Remember the two scientists and their stories?)

Who knows for certain. However, it was known by the earliest Greeks, as they were the first to determine the diameter (and they were only off by a few thousand miles).

Well, you know how it's said: "Believe and don't search". People believe this things because it's an explanation to what they don't know. It's easier to say "I believe" from the start, than to search.
