Someone who is trainable should be your first concern, because if they aren't trainable and willing to learn you might as well show them the door. You want a self starter/self motivated, who can take initiative and doesn't need constant direction. You also want someone who can delagate when appropriate so they don't take it all upon themselves and get overloaded. They need to work well with people, have good common sense. They need to have experience in whatever business you are in. Trustworthy. They need to have good time management as well. Another point people often fail to inquire about is are they able to keep things confidential and steer clear of any employee gossip. Can they discourage employee gossip as well and make sure it's known this isn't something your company will tollerate? Employee gossip has a huge negative effect on a company far more than most people realize. If need be can they document discipline of employees and handle letting them go? Can they motivate and inspire others?
