How do you explain this without destroying the magic?

we went to Disney for the first time in august of this year and my daughters are now 5 and 6...

they asked me, "Mommy, are the princesses real?"

i say, " They are as real as Santa, The Easter Bunny, and The Tooth Fairy. ARE THEY REAL???"

they answer, "Yes"

then i say, "Well then they ARE REAL. Some people don't believe in them and that's okay, they believe what they believe AND YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE"

there aren't anymore questions after that, as far as Santa,my husband tells them there are Santa's helpers at the mall since he is so busy. We tell them the real Santa is the guy who we get our pictures with every year. Where we live, there is a photographer who takes professional Santa pics (not the polaroid or printed ones that fade) and her husband dresses up every year in the same outfit so we make him the REAL Santa.

good luck!

when they get older, then it's time to explain how you were told the same things as a child and it's part of the beauty of Christmas and explain what your family told you and what your family did to celebrate and how they stayed up til 3am so they could put the presents under the tree so you didn't know there was no Santa. then tell them the true meaning of Christmas in your beliefs to them. they may feel slighted, so tell them how stunned you were when you found out.

a great part of childhood is imagination, keep it going as long as you can. Good luck!

Really depends on how old the child is. If they're in school, one of their classmates will most likely tell them the truth.

Another thing you should consider is the emotional maturity of the child. I can't even remember a Christmas that I believed in Santa Claus (I had evil cousins who insisted on crushing any and every belief I had in fairytales) but it didn't take any of the magic away. Honestly, all really young kids care about is the presents. Once they get older they start to value spending time with their family on the Holidays. Santa just isn't as big a deal as he used to be.

Santa Claus is the magic of Christmas, he lives in your heart if you will let him. He is there everytime you hear a Christmas carol or see a child's eyes light up on Christmas morning when they wake up and realize that it's Christmas.
Santa exists in all of mankind, there are just some too greedy and tied up in their own little worlds that they refuse to let him in.
Do I believe in Santa Claus? Of course I do and I will keep on believing until the day I die. Because as long as I believe, I know there is still hope for all of us.
Merry Christmas !

I chose to tell my oldest child about Saint Nickolas and the legends on which the modern santa was first based when he was school aged. I looked up a lot of info on the web. There also also legends for the candy cane and many other christmas icons.

My younger two are just 3 and 1 and they dont really care yet.

I have 3 children. A 3 year old, 8 year old, and an 10 year old.

When my oldest child asked, I told her the truth. That there isn't an actual Santa that comes in the house at night and leaves gifts. The gifts are actually from mom and dad. But.... the spirit of Santa, giving to others, generosity, etc... is in our hearts.

I would tell them yes there is one untill of course they are old enough to understand. I would also tell them the story of Jesus's birth and incorporate that into why Santa brings them presents. I would say its because Santas celebrates the birth of Jesus.

Yes, but Santa only comes around on Christmas Eve night, when ever one is sleeping.

Read that old response "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause"

I don't remember all of it - but I'm sure you can find it online.

The gist of it was that Christmas magic lives in everyone. He is in our hearts.

Hope that helps!
