that's a toughy. i don't think punk's about how a person dresses or any sort of "definition". really it's about self-expression, attitude, anarchy, being what you want and not caring what others think (middle finger to the world).

funny thing is, even within the "punk world" there is still convention. mohawks, punk music, piercings, etc...

to me, punk may be the last bastion of leftist free expression (skinheads notwithstanding), like how it was in the 60's. but with cooler music. hehe

Getting drunk and pissed off and saying something about it. Yeah go on, buy the leather jacket and the docs, that makes you so "punk" thats a ridiculous statement only hot topic goons live by. It's looking at that rockstar on stage, that pop star on the TV, that millionare acter on the screen and sticking your middle finger up and let the world know, you don't ever want to live that life. You different and thats good, because it makes you better, while everyone is trying to figure you out, your too busy having it figured out and living you life the best you can.

The attitutde has a lot to do with the working class as well, thats why a lot of the punks have this Socialist/communist approach to politics, the whole anarchy thing is different, it's the same thing as the NS Skinheads (not all skinheads are Fascist, but what do you know).

as with any "label" there is always always different viewpoints to why they are labeled. for example ppl hat cut there wrists are emos, ppl that wear glasses are nerds, etc. But the overall sterotyipical charactoristics of a punk is outlined here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punk_subculture . Also an intersting point is that they are not some new fad, they first became big in the 1970's after the love era of the 60's failed. (but thats debatable of course) hope it helps! good luck!
