We do the same as you.. We make a trip and each of us picks out a special ornament that we like the best, so we can build up a beautiful collection over the years. My kids are still quite young (8 and 10), but that's a great idea for them to take their ornaments with them for their tree.
I love the idea of them picking out their own. It gives them a sense of pride in decorating the tree and each year there are great new memories. :)

That's really sweet. But in my house we got kind of tired of the memorabilia look, and last year ended up buying something more sophisticated! I waited for the after Christmas sales, got a prelit tree FINALLY and bought several boxes of coordinated ornaments. After several years of collecting "family" ornaments, we put them away until we want a break from these and go back to them! It isn't that I don't like the old ones, just wanted a change. Everyone loves it, so it must have been time....

White goes with anything, except white ornaments might be a bit too much (depends, though). You can be matchy-matchy with the light colors, if you like. But personally, I think you should add ornaments that mean something to you. Are you just starting your ornament collection? Or is this for a store display or something? As for me, if I had a white tree, I'd change all the lightbulbs to blue, and use gold tinsel. But, everyone has their own preferences.

I buy my son quite a few ornaments each year. Like last year I gave him Garfield and something else.( I am bad mother for not remembering) This year I got him an ornament that looks like Fenway Park, ( he can have that all he wants.eww Red Sox) Fisherman, and Fireman boot that has a dalmation in it. I love buying oranaments. It's cool to remember what was going on back when bought them, when you open the box to put them up.

That's a wonderful tradition you have.
I have inherited many ornaments, those all used to go on the tree - until my cats started playing with them.
Now we choose durable plastic ornaments ... But I still take out the others and look at them.

That's what we do.
When my children get theirs each year I try to initial and date them, sometimes there is enough room for thier names. Sometimes they paint their own.
We each take turns putting on our first ornament, it is a serious decision. My choice changes yearly but for some they have a very special one that they use each year.
My parents had brass ornaments for each of their children that they would put on...up high enough to where we couldn't reach! They also had a decorative nest with lovebirds in it that they would hid in a hole on the tree.

thats a good idea. i just buy them after christmas when they are on sale. then the next year you can do your tree completely different like in the stores. one year we had an all blue tree with peacock ornaments, the next all gold stars..ect. the past two years i haven't had a tree though, its a mixture of laziness and living in a crouded apartment.
