Matsuzaka wants to sign for a major league club
The Sox want to sign him because hes a quality pitcher
Boras wants him signed because it hurts is image if he doesn't reach an agreement, plus its less money for him, his client, and his other clients
The Lions in Japan want him signed because they need the money
Of course he will be signed. Boras wants to keep the years down, the Sox want them up. I see 4/5 years, 12+ Million each. 4 years 50million.
He earns 3million in Japan, but he should be paid what he deserves.. its unfair if hes not, the Sox will not be that cheap, it sends the wrong message to the guy.
When even bad pitchers get 8million, The bid money will rule out 18million a year.. thats too high.

Bidding on him just to keep the Yankees from getting him in 2007 is a VERY bad business move.
1) It would be a tremendous blow to the Red Sox credibility in the future. No Japanese team would want to deal with them again.
2) It is negotiating in bad faith. Major League Baseball could turn right around to give the rights to someone else if this is a bad faith negotiation.
3) Next year he is an unrestricted free agent - the Yankees (or anyone else) could sign him with no issues whatsoever. So all you've done is kept him from the majors for 1 year.
While everyone is talking $10m or so, remember we are dealing with Boras. I expect it to be somewhere between $12m - $15m. I've heard the Red Sox really want a 4 year deal while Boras is insisting on 3 - that gives him a chance to bring him back out on the free agent market sooner. New contract = more $.

I agree, Matsuzaka will probably not be signed. Such a huge posting bid by Boston says to me that the Red Sox are more interested in him NOT becoming a Yankee, then they ARE interested in him becoming a Red Sox.
Unless of course they can get Boras to agree on something like a 4 year 20 million contract, which of course Boras won't agree too.

If the Sox sign him, it is likely to be in the 4 years/$10 million per year range. Daisusaka's agent is Scott Boras, the same guy who represents Johnny F. Damon, Jason Varitek and lots of other top tier athletes. He gets a percentage of what his client gets, so he is not settling cheap.

I think the Sox will have to come up with closer to 10 million. He'll want what other "franchise" MLB players recieve, not just big money compared to what Seibu can offer him. Remember, his agent wants him to get as much as he possibly can. The Sox have already forked over the money to Seibu; so in for a penny, in for a pound.

There's talk that Bora's is asking 60+ million for 4 years. There's also talk that this whole ploy was to block the Yankees from signing him.
Who Knows.

The Yankee's placed third, so thats not it. He will probably get from 10-13m per year. Boras works for Matsuzaka, not the other way around.

This signing, if any, will set the precedence by which all other free agent pitchers sign.
