Last year my sister had this same problem and she ended up giving me the best gift that any person has ever given me in my life. Now a piece of paper with a few words may not seem like that much but to me it was better than a cave full of gold to hear what were printed on those words. Christmas isn't about giving but since it has become such a great tradition to give then why dont you do something simple like just write letters to those that are important to you and give them to them in person. I guarantee it is something that will last a lot longer and leave a much greater impression than any other store bought gift you can come up with.

Just tell them the truth. No need to get caught up in all the hype of gift giving or getting caught in the trap of going in debt. If you can't do it then don't feel that you must. If you don't have the means it won't make you into a bad person and it won't make them any worse or any better off. It's just the way it it is and it's not your fault. If you feel you really have to then go to a dollar store and find some small useful items. Anyway after it's all over and done with it all becomes forgotten. Peoples minds become distracted and hopefully their lives will continue.

Most of your friends and family are probably aware of your financial problems. If not they will be understanding.
Consider this. Why don't you write a letter on pretty paper or stationary and tell them what it is that you love or like about them. Tell them why they are special to you and your glad you have them in your life. Tell them at the end you wish you were able to get them a gift this year because they have been a gift to you in your life. You can roll up the piece of paper and tie it with a pretty ribbon.
You could also perhaps bake cookies or something else to give with the letter. If funds don't permit you to bake very much consider just making one cookie that is double the size of a normal cookie.

It's okay not to give gifts....it's all about the spirit of Christmas anyway....not all of this commercialism.....really gets out of hand and makes alot of people feel bad.....those that can afford all of this gift giving.
I hope next year will be prosperous for you....good luck!
