The Second World War began on September 3 1939 when the UK and France declared war on Germany (two days after Germany invaded Poland). As far as when it exactly ended depends on the region. On May 7, 1845 German forces surrendered unconditionally to the allies. In the Pacific front Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945. For more details check out these sites

It began in 1939 with Germany invading Poland. But the US didn't get involved until sometime later. When the US was involved in the European theater, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. After that it was truly a "world war". It basically ended in 1945 with US troops marching into Berlin and Hitler's suicide. Also in 1945, the Japanese signed an unconditional surrender on the USS Missouri battleship. Dropping 2 atom bombs on Japan ended the war quickly.

September 1,1939 when Germany invaded Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany first then a week later Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa joined in, to August 14,1945 with the unconditional surrender of Japan.

From whose point of view? The Nazis started invading all over the place long before the US got into it. So, the beginning date depends upon which country you are talking about. The ending dates were VE [Victory in Europe] Day and VJ [Victory in Japan] Day.
It also depends upon what you refer to as being "in the war". FDR had received a letter written by Enrico Fermi and signed by Albert Einstein which caused him to create the "Manhattan Project" [the research program whose goal was to build an "atomic device" before the Nazis did] on December 6, 1941--yep, the Manhattan Project was officially started BEFORE the attack by the Japanese Navy on Pearl Harbour.
VE was pretty much guaranteed when the US/England let Stalin and his Soviet Army go into and take Berlin and Hitler committing suicide. VJ Day was brought about because of Fat Man and Little Boy--the first two "atomic devices".

With the answers you are receiving here I guess you will need to do more research. Remember that The USA fought in two wars are the same time. Be sure you get the dates each of the enemies surrendered. Germany and Japan did not surrender on the same date.
