Edgar Allan Poe, Writer

Born: 19 January 1809
Birthplace: Boston, Massachusetts
Died: 7 October 1849
Best Known As: Author of "The Raven"
Edgar Allan Poe's classic poem "The Raven" cemented his reputation as a black-feathered literary master of the macabre. In the late 1820s and early 1830s Poe mixed poetry with work as a soldier in the U.S. Army. He was dismissed from West Point and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he began writing prose. Throughout the 1830s and 1840s Poe worked on various magazines in Richmond, Philadelphia and New York, and also published creepy short stories and poems, including "The Purloined Letter," "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Cask of Amontillado." His story The Murders in the Rue Morgue is widely considered to be the first modern detective story, with Poe the forerunner of later masters of the craft like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. Never in robust health, and a heavy drinker into the bargain, Poe died under mysterious circumstances at age 40 after visiting Virginia to lecture. He was found languishing on the street in Baltimore and taken unconscious to a local hospital, where he died.

Poe's detective in The Murders in the Rue Morgue was named C. Auguste Dupin... Baltimore's National Football League team, the Ravens, is named in whimsical tribute to Poe's famous poem... Since the 100th anniversary of Poe's death in 1949, an anonymous visitor has come to Poe's grave each year on the writer's birthday, leaving three roses and a bottle of cognac. By tradition no one attempts to follow the "Poe Toaster" and his identity remains unknown. However, it is presumed others have taken over for the original visitor... Poe wrote an 1836 essay unmasking the chess-playing automaton The Turk as a human-powered fraud.

Edgar Allan Poe, born in Boston at an early age (literary joke there)

He was a genius. His father abandoned the family around the time he was born and his Mother died a year or two later of TB. He was raised in Virginia by a wealthy man named John Allan (people often misspell Poe's middle name. He was taken to England and received some education there.

He came back to the US and attended the University of Virginia and ran up gambling debts and was more or less disowned by Allan. Poe then went to Baltimore and also has a stint at West Point and was court marshaled from the academy. He married his cousin; she was 13 at the time.

His first published writing did not have his name on the pamphlet. His friends were is such high regard of his literary talents they paid for the publishing of the booklet.

Poe more or less invented the mystery novel, horror story and is credited with creating the some of the first science fiction stories

He died when he was only 40. He had lifelong problems with alcohol and drug abuse and there are theories he may have died of rabies.

Due to a bunch of strange errors it is possible that Poe's body is not actually buried in his grave

He was also a great poet:

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

He's the tortured poet who basically invented the modern horror genre. Images from his short stories are part of pop culture -- the pit and the pendulum, the tell-tale heart, the danse macabre.

One of his most famous poems was The Raven, and people are still saying, "Quoth the Raven, Nevermore!"

He was addicted to drugs, and had a horrible life, so if you like soap operas, you really should read about him.

And his stories are very modern -- not all full of stuff and fluff like some 19th century writers (cough! Dickens! cough!). So, give him a try.

Well, he was a great writer who only wanted to make a living off of writing. His father left him and his mother when he was 1 year old and his mother died when he was two years old and he was then adopted by his mothers friend (who's name i can't remember right now) and she was married to a rich man so Edgar went to the best schools, but his step father didn't like him. He was an alcoholic. His most famous work was the Raven and ladies would be all over him so he would recite it for them. He fell in love with his 13 year old cousin named Virginia and married her. He died at the age of 40 and was found in someone elses clothes on the side of the street and died in the hospital.

First off, it's Edgar All*A*n Poe. It's not spelled with an "e." Secondly, go on Wikipedia if you want to know more about him. There's tons of info there, including his works and his life problems.

Maybe your question should read more like 'does anyone know any unusual facts about Poe?' Such as I recently read that although it is a fact that Poe died in a gutter on the street and most thought him a drunkard, there is another possibility that he may have had a disease of some sort.
