I was driving to the supermarket and stopped at a red light. I was sitting there looking straight ahead, thinking about what I was going to buy for Thanksgiving. The light turned green, and suddenly a flurry of activity to my left caught my eye, and a black man driving in the opposite direction was making an obscene gesture with his middle finger at me. I never saw him before in my entire life, and there was no rational reason for what he was doing. I managed to flip the bird back at him as he drove by, but that incident put me into an ugly mood. All the way to the supermarket, I was saying to myself, "that God damn filthy n____." Even while I was shopping I could not get back into my normal happy mood. I am not a redneck but actually liberal when it comes to race relations, civil rights, and equal opportunity. However, if insulted, I will insult back, and if stepped on, I will fight like hell.

This is the "treat others the way you have been treated" idea. It's close, but not right.

You might not be racist, however you may have some other issues underneath that you need to deal with. If that's all it took to get you off center, that's not good. You know that means you allowed someone - else to control your emotions and behavior. Therefore, you weren't in control. Most people I now would have found it funny, a what the hell type of thing. Seem like you allowed it to penetrate you a bit deeply. When you find out why you find your answer. By the way, you can't get upset over things you can't control. You couldn't control why he did it, but you could control what you did
God luck with that

Well, if the guy was asian, there are slurs for that too.
I love when people demand that "other people" go "get help".
Yes, instead of recognizing a mistake and questioning his thoughts in the open, let's send him to some over-analytical chump at $150.00 an hour to analyze his human reactive response to being insulted by someone of another race.
Those who say to "get help" should go "get help" yourselves. Stop thinking that everything can be solved with counseling and maybe offer a suggestion instead.

But using the "n word" is still ignorant no matter if black people use it for themselves, or other people use it for them,
I do not see why calling other people racial slurrs is put into the catagory of "fighting back"
It's unnecessary and evil, life is short and its not worth it to do such things, personaly I know what its like to be said mean things too, Im a muslim and therefore not popular these days ;)
I'm a quiet person that would never hurt anyone, and I dont but you know when people are ignorant and have nothing better to do they might try and cause trouble with me,
I can chose not to respond, but if the insult is enough to respond to I chose intelligence to combat them, and that is fine for me because if I start to swear or whatever, I will just be as stupid as them (and thats reeeally stupid) and I hold myself to a higher degree than that.
You say you are liberal but perhaps you need to have a chat with yourself and see whats going on inside, because if a middle finger is all it takes to use that kind of a word theres a problem.
hope you are not offended, just trying to give advice

Anger serves no purpose unless it can be directed toward a positive goal.Your anger showed you that you are a racist, because it made you think to use the N word. If that was not in
your heart, it would not have come to your mind, no matter what
the circumstance was. It just proves that normally you can repress the thought, but when provoked, it comes out.

There is no excuse for using the N.. word - ever! If somebody was naughty to you it was because an individual human being acted that way. Use of a racial slur is directed at a mass of people who had nothing to do with that event.

hey theres no problem with being a little prejudice, everyone is, but i hate answers that nurture the questioner, and its good that you kept it in, next time walk it off or wash it it off, and just dont care about it, youre being too open minded, just let it go, or else youre a girl

Dude, I feel you. From experience, I usually get rudeness from black people and sometimes they act like they own the world or something. From my particular experience, they're usually loud, obnoxious, and rude. I sometimes catch myself thinking and saying racist remarks but I am not racist. It is only when I get angry.
