or
a person whos in demand and popular regardless of whether they have any talent or other redeeming qualities, only for their social status.

There is a social regester in this and many other countries, If your family is named in that regester than you are a socialite. Mostly its an elitist way of some people to decide that they are better than everyone else, Richer, more desirable, better bred, come from "Good" families etc. Socialites usually only socialize, marry, do business with etc other socialites. It's like a snobby and very exclusive club, full of very rich guys and their families. with long family lines and Old money, think Dupont, Rockafeller, Hurst, Kennedy. folks like that.
