It is not that I can't do anything else. I can do anything I want to do right now. I can stay home and finish the book I have been working on, if I want to. I don't need to work, but I love what I do.

I teach English. I know more about English and English literature than most people because electricians, for example, do not need to know _Rime of the Ancient Mariner_ by heart, right? So, where else in this world can I talk about the things I love the most (grammar rules and literature) and get to experience great pride and excitement as I watch fifty faces light up with "OH! I get it!"

I have taught remedial students (football and basketball players--mostly minorities and non-trad types) not only to write better than most of their peers, but to learn the rules of college/life/work/dedication to your goals, etc. I can honestly tell you that after a semester of teaching and watching them learn something (that they may never use again), I would cry as they left the room on the day of finals. I am dedicated to my people/students. I am dedicated to English. I love talking about what I love. I teach because I am a teacher and cannot think of anything else I would rather do.

I am sorry if you have run across some teachers who don't seem to like their jobs and don't seem to want to be there for the students. There are plenty of those folks out there. I can tell you that I have met some teachers and I really do wonder the same thing, so I am not offended by your question. But, do me a favor, okay? Try not to make the statement you made so broad, to include ALL of us. There are some of us who do not dream of doing something else--who found our perfect job in teaching. Perhaps you could ask, "Why does it seem like my teacher......" Then, I would respond, "He was probably doing the job until something better came along, but nothing better came along for him, and he is probably pretty miserable and depressed about that. His 'I don't care anymore' attitude makes him even more pathetic and robs you of a great experience---I'm sorry"

I guess you didn't expect a lecture on your day off...LOL!

Do you have empirical evidence, or are you just parroting a cliche' that's a lot older than you are?
