I teach ESL in a Japanse Senior High School. A student in my university prepatory 'reading class' has asked me the above question. I'm at a loss. HELP ME!!!

"taking into account" means taking into consideration, considering a certain circumstance when making a decision, "taking account of" means taking inventory, counting

for example. We want to take the students to a play, taking into account how many students, transportation and time, we must take account of our budget to make sure it is feasible to do this.

eg. taking into account recent population growth rates, there might not be enough space on earth after 100 years...
