I'm sorry but Lobster above me is incorrect. The reason they are not called Prince or Princess is because their father is not of royal lineage. He doesn't have a title therefore they are not eligible for royal title.

I include the following link to back up my information:

It is incorrect to say Anne and Mark 'decided' that their children would not have titles. Since about 1917 the titles of prince and princess have only been for the sovereign's children and grandchildren *in the male line*, ie: the children of the sovereign's sons. This was to cut down on the number of HRHs but is obviously sexist; Peter Phillips is the eldest grandson of the king and has nothing because his royal lineage is 'only' through his mother.

The children of Princess Margaret, George VI's daughter, and Princess Mary, George V's daughter, are not HRHs either. The only decision involved was that Mark Phillips would not take a peerage like the husbands of other princesses. Had he been made an earl his daughter would be Lady Zara and his son would use whatever courtesy title had been created. But there was never any choice involved in their being prince and princess or not.

EDIT: to the ignoramus who gave me thumbs down: there are rules as to how titles are granted, and it is not at the whim of the monarch. Did Lord and Lady Harewood 'decide' their sons would not be HRH? No, the rules applied to them which apply to Anne's children. Read The Times' coverage of Peter Phillips' birth in 1977. The *only way* he could have a title would be if one of his parents received a peerage. Becoming a prince was not an option.

When Princess Anne got married to Captain Mark Phillips the Queen offered an Earldom to her husband but Princess didn't want any titles for her children. That the reason. Remember when Princess Margaret married Anthony Armstrong Jones the Queen offered an Earldom to him so Margaret childen would have a titles

Dressing up the boy as a princess will not make him gay, or a serial killer, or depressed as he gets older. He may be embarrassed by it but who doesn't have any embarrassment from their childhood? If this was the other way around and a girl wanted to dress up in as a prince nobody would say anything. Is dressing up as a princess his idea or yours? It sounds like it is yours. My advice would just ask him what he wants or take him down the costume isle and let him pick a "boy" costume.

Also the Royal family are trying to reduce the number of titles that are given out. Titles of PRince and PRincess are only passed down thru the male lineage.

Princess Anne (The Princess Royal) asked the Queen not to give her husband or her children titles so that they could lead as normal a life as possible. They are very unlikely to become king or Queen (about 10 and 11th in line) so they will have to make their own way in life and a title can get in the way.

Ms Balls and Sue N have it correctly. Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips decided that they didn't want titles for their children so that they could lead as normal a life as possible. Princess Anne has also said that her children are not royal, the Queen just happens to be their grandmother.

To clarify this.

The Queen can name anyone she want's to as a Prince or Princess, and no-one gets the title (no matter what their parents are) unless she gives it to them. The title of Prince/Princess is at the sole discretion of the reigning Monarch.

Those who answered that Anne did not wish her children to have the titles are totally correct. The Queen in fact offered to make them HRH's, but Anne declined the titles, saying that since there was no chance her children would inherit the throne, they should lead as "normal" lives as possible.

It was decided at the time of their births, by the Princess Royal and their father that their children would not hold any royal style or title. Their parents wanted their children to have as much of a normal life that a grandchild of the monarch can have. To be encumbered with a royal title or style would hamper them from having a normal life.

Her children hold no titles and no styles.
