Fifa happy with 2010 progress
22/11/2006 17:55 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A delegation of Fifa officials expressed satisfaction on Wednesday with South Africa's preparations for the 2010 World Cup, declaring they had made more rapid progress than their German predecessors.
"Fifa is very happy and satisfied with the progress made," said Horst Schmidt, who is to take up a new post as Fifa's coordinator in South Africa.
"Not only is the country on time, but a bit ahead of Germany at the same time. We are happy with preparations and now it's for the Local Organising Committee to maintain the momentum," added the German who was one of the driving forces behind this year's tournament in his homeland.
Schmidt was part of a delegation, which also included Fifa general secretary Urs Linsi and marketing director Jerome Valcke, who have been briefed since the start of the week on preparations for the first ever World Cup in Africa.
Schmidt told reporters that the main focus was on the progress being made on building and upgrading the 10 stadiums which are to host the tournament.
"After evaluating the plans for the construction of the stadiums, we were satisfied that there is enough time to construct, equip, and test the stadiums before the day of the kick-off. The task ahead becomes very clear," he said.
The delegation's verdict after the visit serves as a significant boost to the local organisers after concerns expressed by Fifa president Sepp Blatter who said in September that he needed "to fire up the organising committee."
Irvin Khoza, chairperson of the local organising committee said he was happy with "Fifa's vote of confidence."
"The schedule will be met as proposed and come the first quarter of next year, construction must start," he said at a media conference in Johannesburg.
President Thabo Mbeki pledged last month that South Africa would confound international sceptics by meeting its deadlines and staging a well-oiled World Cup.

I think that it is disgustingly unprofessional. It is a huge embarressment to South Africa that they pitched up so late.
What the hell were they thinking and who do they think they are?

They need to understand that that the awarding of the right to host the Football World Cup is a fantastic honour and they should not think that they are doing FIFA a favour by hosting the tournament - which is the impression they are currently giving. FIFA took a chance by awarding the WC to an African nation - they are risking making huge losses on their investments as opposed to giving, for example, a European nation the rights (just look at how financially successful the German WC was).
If FIFA feels that their money is in jeopardy, they would have no problem to move the WC to another country - we've already heard all the stories that the Aussies are keen to host it.

If this is the attitude that the SA world cup commitee are already showing, then one wonders how can they put up a successful event in 2010.

I think ultimately, SA will host the tournament, but it will be merely an adequate one and certainly far from the one of the best hosted - unless if a drastic change of attitude takes place - which lets face it, will not happen due to greed, self-interest and lack of competence.

In the short term no damage but in the medium term it will be one of many things used against them. The corruption within FIFA has been well documented since the days of Jaoa Havelange and Blatter was one of his Deputies and succeeded him. Blatter is most unpopular with the major footballing nations and he is seeking re-election in early 2007. SA's successful 2010 bid was not based on it's ability to host the event but more on the willingness of African nations to vote for Blatter next year in exchange for the World Cup. Now FIFA is considering no longer having a President and replacing this position with a committee. If this comes to fruition in 2007 then Blatter will be out and the numerous dissenting voices within FIFA at hosting 2010 in South Africa will win the day. So what I expect is that towards the middle of next year the World Cup will be re-scheduled for the US and this incident amongst a host of other issues concerning non delivery will be cited as the reason. Bad for South Africa but best for the Tournament as there are too many issues surrounding South Africa's suitability as a host Nation.

Malan it's called damage control. They still didn't explain why they didn't pitch and Jordaan " Doesn't know what all the fuss is about." You can believe them if you like but nobody else does. There are still no shovels in the ground and everything is paperwork and promises. FIFA must be crapping themselves and as I recall they didn't give constant reassurances about Germany 2006. If you understood football you would appreciate that when a Manager gets a vote of confidence it is the kiss of death. So goodbye South Africa - Hello USA.

IIt seems the South African World cup CEO and his lot feel that its South Africa's given right to host the World Cup, rather than a privelage. In actual fact they should be thankful that South Africa is allowed to host the World Cup.

What? You expected professionalism from the clowns in charge of South Africa and South African affairs?
That was the beginning of the end of South Africa's shot at hosting the World Cup.

The 3 guys that had to pitch were both black (2) and white (1), so we can't point any racial fingers. Fact remains, though, that was highly unprofessional and if they can't come up with a damn good excuse, they need to be replaced. There's too much at stake.
