That's a ******* great question. All I can say is that "bad" words have more or less power depending on the environment in which they are spoken. British sailors during the Victorian era swore like ...well... sailors, yet in polite (ruling class) society of that era the same words would be reason for shock and scandal.

A reasoned study would deem that words are simply symbols used to communicate and to surmise that **** is somehow very much more powerful than "intercourse" is absurd.

As a society there is a shared belief that saying **** is a bad thing. Using that word shows moral deficiency. If you don't go along, choose not to agree, and use the word **** you must be prepared to suffer the indignation of the majority.

Bottom line is these words are bad because we say they are, and we pass that along from generation to generation.

Hope this helps as I just pulled this answer out of my ***, so to speak.

Bad words are dictated by a society and a culture, and meanings have been "assigned" to these words. As a society, we decide what is right and wrong, and we then choose what words to use to communicate.

If someone said "Oh Graham crackers!" that is not so bad, but we all know the person meant something else.

Society has rules it lives by, so everyone in that society can predict and function in that society. "Bad words" is one of the rules.

Ok-this is too detailed for this time of night.

Maybe it is the inflection of the word. There was some high and mighty religious groups that considered certain words to be bad. I think it is all Bullsh*t and should be able to say it as it is. You have Sh*t, and the words that mean the same, poop, ca'ka, dookie, poopy, and Dukakis....I don't care what you say that means sh*t in any language.

That's because societies uses techniques of derogation and euphemization. and replacing shocking **** with pooh is simply one of these techniques;
'euphemism' is "an indirect word or phrase that people often use to refer to something embarrassing or unpleasant, sometimes to make it seem more acceptable than what it really is". Euphemisms are words and expressions used to soften or mitigate the reality of the ideas transmitted to an audience. They are an indispensable and universal feature of language use and usage; people from different cultures and communities employ euphemistic terms to talk or write about the phenomena they find embarrassing (e.g., gender-related words), terrifying (e.g., death, war, sickness, catastrophes, pestilences), and taboos (e.g., religion). Another application of euphemisms is to elevate and promote the status of some event or phenomenon. However, it is often used to talk indirectly about things whose explicit description is considered especially inappropriate.

Don't let it get you down. Everyone has random thoughts. It's just a culture thing. One funny thing I think of is... curse words are always the first thing everyone learns when the dabble in a another language. Whats the fasination? Shock value, I guess.

WORDS ARE THE RESULTS OF THOUGHTS - if the thought behind the word is considered "bad" then the word is also considered bad as well.

People put too many thoughts into words......

words are, judgement is what makes them bad. proximity to judgement affects thier value. If no-one hears it how can it be judged. like the tree falling in the woods, does it make a sound if no-one hears it. **** is only bad if on my shoes. pew!!!
btw, cute profile, love it!

Cultural whims, my dear - and they are ever-changing, and all encompassing. Watch TV news from the 50's - the broadcasters smoked. Fur was in, now it's out. And so forth...

Those are levels of the word like you say doo doo, then poop, then crap, then ****... It's pretty much on how old you are, how mad you are, or how old the people in your presence are...
