In a way I think it is apathy but I believe the reason for the apathy is that they don't believe they can make a damn bit of difference.
Most people don't think that there is such a thing as a truthful and honest local politician and that just by applying they would be fighting against people who revel in bribery and corruption on a small but very slimy scale. So why bother?!
Also it's expensive, time consuming and, even though not all local government is slime encrusted, it seems to be a bunch of small minded people round a table arguing for hours over tea and biscuits. Who wants to do that when you could be down the pub with your mates?
Be great if more people got involved with it but I don't think they will.

its not apathy, its the fact that whatever party is in power, they do things that suit themselves, they do not listen to the average british voter, we elect them to carry out thewishes we make on the promises they give, and then renage on those promises. All they do is increase taxes by stealth or otherwise, and make sure they have good pensions and money when they get deselected as mp. Mp 's should have no right to earn money whilst serving as an mp, how many mp's are millionaires? that is the question the british public should be asking when they elect an mp, and labour have so many mp;s who are millionaires, mp's should be stopped earning while serving then people would vote again, because then we would know they are actually serving their constituents!

I believe it is the feeling that local politics lack the importance of national politics that keeps people from getting more involved

I'll admit its the crappy pay, even if no one else will.
Why spend $30K to get elected and then make $18K per year? That's what Tennessee pays its representatives.
City and County reps make even less than that.
