I've had this one bottle of mascara for over two years now and my friend said once it goes over about 3 or 4 months, I should throw it away because it's expired. What will happen if I keep using it? How will it effect me?

Yes, it will definitely affect you. Once makeup is past its expiration, bacteria grows over time (different times, for different makeup) and putting that nasty bacteria all over your face, is an absolutely awful thing. It can easily damage your skin, very badly. Plus the shelf life of mascara is only 3 months, so make sure to throw it away! Here is a list of all makeup expirations:
Oil-Free Foundation: 1 year
Cream or Compact Foundation: 18 months
Concealer: 12-18 months
Powder: 2 years
Blush and Bronzer: 2 years
Cream Blush: 12-18 months
Powder Eye shadow: 2 years Cream Eye shadow: 12-18 months
Eyeliner: 2 years
Liquid eyeliner: 3-6 months
Mascara: 3 months
Lipstick: 2 years
Lip liner: 2 years
Lip gloss: 18-24 months
Nail Color: 1 year

what, don't you use it more than once a month--mine never lasts that long.. it always dries up in a a few months.
really, it is probably okay to use, the manufacturer just wants you to buy some more--if it is not dried up & you are the only one that has used it--i would still use it. I don't think it is a problem you need to worry about, especially if you are the only one that has used it. you should never share makeup-you could get an infection if the person using it has once-they might not even know that they have one-

There is a build up of bacteria after about 4-6 months. I know how you feel though. If you keep using it, you could end up with a nasty eye infection...its not worth keeping old bottles

Make up is made from some of the same stuff that your food is make from. You should throw out expired makeup for the same reason that you wouldn't drink spoiled milk. Give your makeup the sniff test. If it smells a little bit iffy...toss it.

You should throw it away. The bacteria that builds up in makeup (especially mascaras and the like) can cause infections like conjunctivitis and even lead to serious problems like blindness.

Face is 1 of the most important things right?
It Will soil ur face n ur good looks
My be u will get some infection or allergy like thing on your face
So throw it n Never again use any makeup which is expired

Beside expired makeup can develop parasited and then it will break out your face. And can make you sick.

all my makeup is old and nothing has ever happened to me...
honestly how often would you wear mascara so that youd use it all in 3 months???

let me tell you my sister had some really old eye make-up and she kept on using it.. well guess what she got this really bad eye infection to the point that she had to go to the doctor to get prescribed eye drops.

iyou should throw it away coz if u use it likely higher risk of eye infections.
