He was shot in one of the final scenes. It was set up that way because they did not want to have to shoot that scene more than once. It had a lot of special effects. What little had to be done to make the film work could be handled through special effects and a body double.

Movies are seldom shot in sequence. The actual order in which the scene are filmed depends on locations, availability of actors and crew and many other issues. For instance all the scenes that take place in a certain room may be shot together even though they may appear at widely spaced times in the final movie. In a movie that is heavy on special effects or stunt work, the dialog and close up scenes may be shot first. Then the expensive stars and supporting actors can go on to other jobs and the movie is completed with doubles and computer graphics. I think that some producers shoot ending scenes early in the schedule as a hedge against just such a disaster as the death or serious injury of a star. Also directors often change the story line as they go along so it is possible that the "Crow" that was seen in theaters was not the one originally intended.

Hi, that was a sad death:-( Brandon Lee had shot most of the footage for the entire film previously and they also had a stand-in with the make-up toward the ending.
