A lot of online retailers offer free shipping. Most of them are 7-10 days. How do they offer this without padding the price of their items to pay for it?

Their costs, including shipping, are built into the price of the merchandise. Some sellers give free shipping as a sort of a discount if you buy enough - the shipping cost then decreases their profit on the sale.
