the subdued black primer look

Primer is not intended to be a finished coat...it's merely used to prepare a surface for paint. A primered look will appear nice for a year or so, but it will not last as long as a finished product. For a longer lasting appearance, I'd opt for a 2-stage paint system, but don't use a clearcoat. This will give the matte look you want, and last about twice as long as conventional primer. Primer is also a porous material, so anywhere you touch it, it'll leave handprints and they won't come off.

You have to paint it with black primer, or a flat finish paint that looks like it.
