It is a browser helper application. You view web pages in Internet Explorer (or some other browser) They don't originally have the plugins....or additional helper applications to play or display some of the media on the internet such as flash movies, acrobat reader files, or music files. You have to download and install them separately.

First of all there are no stupid questions, people learn by asking questions, myself included.
A plugin is a script or small program designed for a specific task.
They are added to software to enhance it in some way to do some extra job not designed into the original program. A lot of times they are designed by third party programmers and sometimes by the original programmer to enhance his/her software.
