It could be the thermocouple, as others have suggested. On the other hand, most gas water heaters are supposed to come with a draft hood at the top of the heater. The function of this is to prevent a large updraft, due to a wind, from extinguishing the pilot light, which is very small and easy to put out. Check and see if you have one and if it is functioning.

You need to have that looked at soon. The pilot may need cleaned. I don't know if it has a safety on it or not, but I sure hope it doesn't blow.....I hate gas, all electric here. I had a heater blow up in my face once, I ducked real quick and only had my hair damaged some. That is why I hate gas and will not have it in my home.

you need a new thermal coupling. It's a small wire that sticks up in front of the pilot and the control on the side (where gas connects). Turn nob,( off ,pilot, on.) to off unscrew nut from control with small alum. wire intact, fallow it to the pilot where it should pull down and out ( some have a screw on a bracket) . take it to the hardware store an get a new one same size. Reinstall.

It's probably the thermocouple. If it can no longer conduct heat it shuts down the gas valve, thus providing you with safety.
