Well...Pooh is a species.
It's just like saying...
SPOT the DOG.
Instead, now it's
WINNIE the POOH.
So, Winnie is his name.

In actual fact, the Winnie is short for Winnipeg, which is a place in Canada, I think. A.A.Milne was a veterinarian, who was also conscripted to serve in the war. On his travels he was in Winnipeg and adopted a bear, which became his (Platoon? Squadron? not sure of correct term) mascot during the war. He cared for the bear, and named it Winnie - after the town the bear was from. After the war, Winnie was given to a zoo, but Milne kept visiting him often - they had grown very close. Eventually Milne took his son, Christopher Robin Milne, with him on the visits...and so it all began.
(This history is actually told on one of the Pooh Bear DVDs as a special feature)

A "pooh bearer" was the person who used to carry away the important person's bedpan/bucket, that's right, carrying the "pooh", someone in a low position, scapegoat, etc. How this got turned into a child's story by teh author is anyone's guess. 'Winnie" is often used in place of Winston or Winnifred, and Winnie The Pooh Bear does bear a striking resemblance to Winston Churchill, if he smoked cigars.

.... his NAME is Winnie. The Pooh is the one you should be asking questions about... WHAT'S A POOH!?!?! That should be your question, and that's the species of bear that he is. He's a makebelieve, stuffed Pooh Bear. His name is actually Winnie, but they call him Pooh. And THATS the truth. ;-)

Winnie is his actual given name, Pooh is his, uh. . .species, if we can call it that. 'Pooh' is just a nickname that the other residents of the Hundred Acre Forest give him.
