well in my view the cottagers were a symbol of the times and the way society was portrayed through Mrs. Shelley's eyes, as closed minded. It seems to mirror our society today as outcasts and "monsters" would know. It also shows that society is human and can't help but protect itself from what it deems as a threat. The great art is that while that is going on in the book the reader on the outside sees that it shouldn't be that way, that compassion and comprehension should be shown to this "monster", which is what authors of that time did, that was their form of art, twisting their work to make the audience look harder at themselves. Sorry if I made it too complex, sometimes i think to oddly :)
