I was wondering if I should use footnotes/endnotes when I re-word somebody else's work. In other words, do we only use footnotes or endnotes only when we write something exactly the same?

Footnote: A note placed at the bottom of a page of a book or manuscript that comments on or cites a reference for a designated part of the text.

Endnote: A note placed at the end of an article, chapter, or book that comments on or cites a reference for a designated part of the text.

I don't know of anywhere on any University level where footnotes are still used. Most everywhere uses MLA style or APA style. Both cite within the text.
