I have watched alot of hockey and I have never seen it happen.
But can you do this in the nhl? when a penalty shot is called, can you choose between taking the shot or having a 2 mintue powerplay. thanks if anybody knows.

No I mean when a penalty shot is called. Can the team taking the penalty shot choose to take a powerplay instead of the penalty shot.

I'm sorry, but no. The official decides if it is a penalty shot or not. You need to go the the rule book of ice hockey. There are some rules that say when a penalty shot is awarded. In the official rules and casebook 2005-2007 of ice hockey rule #406 explains when and what happens when a penalty shot is called.

You must have the penalty shot taken against you if you commit an offense. The only way this would work against you and the only way teams would pick a powerplay instead of a shot would be if the WHOLE 2 minutes had to be carried out, even if a goal was scored. That may be a very good option the NHL could take. Atleast you would have a chance to go for more than just one goal.

Well, I've seen powerplays where a team didn't even get a single shot on goal, let alone a perfect opportunity as you would get with a penalty shot. It would be more beneficial to take the shot anyway... But as a rule, if a penalty shot is called you have to take it, so there's really no argument.

I follow ya, DJ, and its a good question. I think everyone agrees that there probably aren't any scenarios where you'd choose the man advantage. I think even with a one goal lead inside of 2 minutes, you'd prefer to take the penalty shot.
I believe the answer to the question is, as a few people stated, that you must take the shot. I found this PDF from a couple of years ago. Look at the bottom of page 6.

No, Penalty shots must happen when you are tripped on a break-away or if the puck is coverd by a player in the crease. The rest is a Power play.

it extremely is achieveable. yet you will ought to play with 3 extensive-unfold traces & place your good participant on your fourth traces. countless team play like thsi while they dress a hard guy. yet another subject is while a team dress 7 def & 11 forward. there is usaully a def that has some protection subjects yet extremely offensive to play on the powerplay.

no. a penalty shot is given for a specific reason, not just any old penalty.
