This appears to be a geometric series, but I
don't understand where the 1 comes from.
If a = 100 and ar = 25,
then r = 1/4, so the series should run :
100, 25, 25/4, 25/16, 25/64, 25/256.
So I must be wrong.

Hmm. This series doesn't seem to be geometric...

However, it appears as though the first term was multiplied by 1/2^2 to get 25, and the second term was multiplied by 1/5^2 to get 1.

Does that mean anything to you?
