If they are dying? A very good man that I have known for my entire life has been battling cancer for awhile, and I remember having a talk with him about how sad he was that he didn't have any grandchildren who could carry on his name, and I want to let him know that I am going to give my first born his last name as their middle name.

Do you tell people these things? Write them a letter? I have no clue what to do...

Just say "You mean so much in my life, I would like to name my child after you."

I would tell him in person. More personal than a letter. Sorry about what you are going through, I know it is tough!
