I've just been reading a book that says how humans have more in comon physiologically with water animals than land animals. One of the points it made was that apes can not cry...

Is this true?

Actually humans fall under the classification of Apes. The closest relative to man is the chimpanzee....not a dolphin. Although I have not seen tears, I have seen low land gorillas morn at the death of member in their family group. I have also seen a mother gorilla morn the death of a baby.

You should ask your question to a zoo keeper who cares for a chimp, gorilla, urangatang, or bonobo.

Another animal with close genetic ties to man....the rat. Go figure.

I wish I knew. This isn't much of an answer, but I once read a book by a country veterinarian who had to park because he saw a dead badger in the road. The mate; the other badger, was howling in grief and wouldn't move to let him drive by, yet normal behaviour would be to panic & run away from a person.
Only another mammal; nothing to do with sea creatures.

I suppose it depends on how you define crying? And which breed of apes they meant? I guess you'd have to ask them which they'd studied in the wild?

Humans can't breathe under water, so I'm not convinced that the author of your book was making valid points. Maybe they were thinking about historical origins? On the other hand, I have read that what body hair we have is streamlined for swimming. Who knows? Sorry I couldn't answer your question!

No, they just refuse to cry because they see it as a sign of weakness. Get one anywhere *near* the movie Field of Dreams, though, and they'll weep like children.

I've never heard, read or seen any reference to apes crying.

Gee... you must not like the authors of that book you've read. Was it that badly written? Why not believe what they've printed out for you?

You may be taking this 'Don't believe everything you read' thing a bit to far.
