Plug in -9.3 to see if it works out:

12.8 - (-9.3) = 12.8 + 9.3 = 22.1 ≠ 3.5

So q = -9.3 is NOT a solution.

alright, the whole point of this equation is to solve for q...here goes:

12.8 - q = 3.5
(move 12.8 over to the other side so we can get q by itself, remember, when you move numbers over the equal sign, you have to switch the sign, ex: 12.8 will become -12.8 when it moves over because it was originally positive)
- q = 3.5 -12.8
(now solve the right side)
- q = - 9.3
(now, you cannot keep that negative sign in front of the q because you want to get q all by itself. so pretend that there is a 1 between the negative sign and the q. so it would be -1q. -1q is the same thing as -q. to get q by itself, you now have to divide both sides of the equation by -1.)
-1q/-1 = -9.3/-1
q = 9.3 (when you divded both sides of the equation by -1, q and 9.3 both became positive because a negative divided by a negative equals a positive.

i hope that helped a bit :)

you're right. the answer should be +9.3. but the reason is not because they have the same sign that made 9.3 (+)
12.8-q=3.5
12.8-q-12.8=3.5-12.8 (subtract 12.8 to both sides of the equation)
-q=-9.3
q=9.3 (we multiply both sides of the equation by -1)

No, because you would then get the equation 12.8 + 9.3 = 3.5, which isn't true. The answer is simply 9.3

For the given equation
12.8-q=3.5
Add q to both sides of the equation, you'll get
12.8=3.5+q
Subtract 3.5 from each side
12.8-3.5=3.5-3.5+q
9.3=q
Therefore q is equal to +9.3

-9.3 is NOT the correct answer. According to my calculations, you are correct. The answer I got is +(POSITIVE) 9.3.

It's positive, but not for the reason you gave. When you MULTIPLY numbers with the same sign, the answer is positive.

Positive came to mind, so it must be negative.

no, it is also negative. It becomes positive when you multiply them.
