I guess the "odour du toilet" but also the whites of their eyes. Usually bad hygiene reflects in the eyes...i.e. yellow, runny, crusty, dusty etc..

With your nose. If they stink, they have bad hygiene.

I think that is quite easy to see , their hair , their teeth , their fingernails or
their smell .
