Was it when Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn started to wear pants, ties and suits in public? Or was it earlier with George Sand? When did we get to step out of our dresses and into men's clothes?

Women have always cross dressed since ancient times. For some reason society accepts women dressing as men but not men dressing as women

Pharaoh Hatshepsut was a women but she even wore a false beard and had her statues done as a man.

I don't think it's cross dressing, I think it became a matter of dressing for comfort. Look at the women in the movies of the 1950's and 60's wearing dresses, high heels, gloves, hats etc. just to go to the grocery store. People even wear jeans to fancy restaurants and some churches now, males and females. It's a more casual world.

I think it was around the turn of the century(1900). Women unfortunately are seen as the weaker sex. So men feel they are less of a man or person because they dress as the "weaker" sex.
