Religion is the basis for how we live our lives and most people don't take too kindly to being told they are wrong about their religion (or being questioned about their beliefs) when they know they are right. However, everybody thinks their religion is right, so...defending themselves turns into name calling and telling everybody else that they are going to hell.
I stand up for what I believe in, but I respect other opinions/beliefs as well. All religion is interesting to me though as I have studied many different theories; so I can take a step back and view it from an open minded perspective. Not too many people are open to new religions, though; hence the negativity.

I don't think it's about religion. If you look further, people argue about politics and science as well as many other things that some of us may feel unimportant. In the end, the main problem lies with us, not religion. I believe it's about personal security - a kind of personal security that we all seek after under the name of religion. So religion is some sort of shelter for us, protecting us from greater harm such as harm of ghosts, demons, the devil, hell, etc including many other security that only we ourselves will know. Then we get offended and threaten when someone come and challenge our security foundation, that is religion (not forgetting politics, science, etc as well).

Personally I think religion has been the biggest joke ever played on man. Believe in God, look around to all the uglyness and realise that he supposely created all you see - the good and the bad.
That in the last century millions and millions of people died by war, disease, plane crashes, the murders, the accidents and on and on and on.....he alone stands charged with the creation of all this we see.....I don't see a gentle god, I see ......

The answer is really simple;
People get frustrated or angry when someone tries to share
their religious beliefs, especially if it is contrary to what they already believe, say for instance Buddhism, Athiest, etc.
All religious groups have their own idea of God and who He is, or isn't, depending on their religion.
so when you or anyone comes along giving them a whole new outlook on their belief system, sure they become defensive, why,
because it's contrary to what they have believed for years.
Just like the bible says, "They will keep on looking but will not see,
and keep on listening but will not hear."
Simply put, God has blinded their eyes and closed their ears,
because they refused to hear the truth.

Because of hypocrisy and misuse of Scripture to support ones own idea. People are tired of being cheated by false teachings and fanaticism and people who think their way is the only way. God is one and He has many names Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, etc. My God is your God but each religion thinks they know who God is. But Krishna says in the Gita. "Whenever their is a decline in religious principals and the truth appears to be lost, I appear again and again or send my representative to reestablish the truth." So many religions one God, it' quite elementary.

I think people get so annoyed by it because the people who believe, act like they know it for a fact, they act like they are right, and everyone else is wrong. Non-believers do the same thing. Nobody should act like they have the answers, because NOBODY does.

Because our faith is the central part of ones core value system, and anyone who challenges that faith- we tend to take personally.
