Can you elaborate on what kind of business?
Some things all businesses need:
Tax number in case you sell in-state, so you can collect sales tax (except New Hampshire of course)
Keep track of expenses - H&R Block has a good workbook with a list of everything that counts as a business expense
Have good suppliers. Don't pay retail for any materials that go into making whatever you're making, if you're making something.

Th service industry is where great companies can be started. People are starting to get more & more dependant on having things brought to them & services rendered. I myself I am starting a retail delivery service of baby products. A market that will forever be there everywhere you go!
