Early in pregnancy is fine, late 2nd, 3rd trimester, NO! Actually, you can lay on your back, but you need a small wedge under one hip so you are not completely flat on your back. ( The weight of the baby occludes the main blood supply to the placenta, which means less blood and oxygen to your baby!) Good luck with your new baby! (I'm an OB RN)

In the later part of pregnancy it is best to sleep on the side as it helps the baby to get more oxygen. At least that is what I remember reading when I was pregnant many years ago. It's also more comfortable usually for the mother.

As long as mommy is comfy, it really isn't a big deal either way.

Best Wishes,

Sue

Its fine in the early months but after 5 months or so, its best to sleep on the side, the baby can lay on a nerve in the spine and then the babys supply of blood can be cut off or not flowing well.

In early pregnancy it's definitely okay for her to sleep on her back.

As far as the end of her 2nd and 3rd trimesters? Depends on the DRs. My sis-in-laws' doctors said absolutely not. My DR said it was fine. The concern is that the weight of the uterus will cut off/hinder blood supply to the baby.

Honestly? It gets SOOO uncomfortable at the end of the pregnancy, that any way she can be comfortable & sleep is fine!!

It depends on how far along she is. During the first trimester, it is not a big deal, however after that the weight of the baby can restrict blood flow, so a woman should NOT sleep on her back after the first trimester. I used to "fake" myself into feeling like I was sleeping on my back by laying on my side and putting a big pillow up against my back and leaning back onto it slightly. It gives you the sensation of sleeping on your back without the risk.

NO -- the main blood supply to your baby runs down your back and to the baby!! I am 31 weeks pregnant and haven't slept on my back for 15+ weeks. If you must sleep on your back, make sure you're not flat, but elevated. It's best to sleep on your sides, and once you get further along, they say it's best to sleep on your left side. It's supposed to be safer for the baby. I go back and forth from left side to right side, but am usually on my left side. Whatever is safest for my baby, that's what I'm gonna do, whether I like it or not!!

It slows the blood supply to the baby. A pregnant woman should sleep on her left side if possible.

If you a pregnant and comfortable sleeping on your back, then sleep on your back. I have found no research indicating it is dangerous for pregnant women to sleep on their back. Personally, sleeping on my back while pregnant was very uncomfortable.

Depending on how far along she is that may be the only way she can sleep. It's OK. Doctors will tell you that the side is preferrable with a pillow in betwwen her legs to even out the weight but again if she's in the later stages any way she can be comfortable is fine.
