Yes, the match burns off the natural gas (sewer gas). It'll help for a while but that doesn't solve your main problem of a smelly toilet.

I suspect that the beeswax seal at the floor has given out. Call in a plumber for a quote (quotes are free). He'll be able to tell if it is the seal ring at the floor or it's a super old toilet and the internal trap is not stopping the sewer gases from coming back in.

Replacing either or both are long and tedious jobs but can be done by a skilled home owner. Having the plumber do them is a bit costly.
