What it is, is nobody's business. There are people who rely upon the Medical model for their health and there are those that do not. When you get pregnant, you do it how you want and let your sister in law do it the way she wants. Live and let live, folks.
Peace!

Well technically it is up to the woman if she wants to receive prenatal care, but when it comes to children and you don't take them to their doctors appointments or get them their shots then it could be defined as neglect depending on the state. Some women don't go to a doctor at all and then have their babies at home. But what is great now is the state will not provide insurance or medicaid to pregnant women if you qualify. But receiving prenatal care is very important because there are so many things that go wrong with pregnancies these days that you don't want to take any chances. Like I had gestational diabetes and that was determined early in my pregnancy like 5 months. The doctor had to put me on a special diet that way it would not affect the baby.

I don't know about the ten week gestation thing the previous poster wrote. My doctor didn't want me to make an appointment till I was 12 weeks pregnant. My doctor gave me advice about what I should be doing and I followed it.
I'm not sure I would call it neglect, but I would be concerned as a parent waiting that long because the doctor's can do test that will help you know if your baby is healthy. Honestly, if she's taking prenatal pills and taking good care of herself, the doctor isn't going to help her to take care of her baby anymore thans he is doing now. But the doctor can check on the baby and make sure there aren't any major problems and to make sure the baby is developing correctly.

Laziness, definitly, neglect is a possibility,or maybe she just does not care! I don't understand why she would put if off..
only thing i can think of is for you to do research on women who did not have prenatal care, and show her the conseqenses!!
And set her up an appointment with a doctor pronto!

I don't think it is neglect, per say. But I can't imagine someone wouldn't want to make sure that all is fine in the womb. I mean, all of the visits that are done between the first one and the 7 month visit is a lot. I can't imagine not going. But I guess it is her choice. But how do you think she will feel if she finds out that something is dangerously wrong that could have been treated if caught earlier?

Nope, in many countries women don't see a doctor unless absolutely necessary before their third trimester. If there are no complications, no problems there really isn't much of a need to see a doctor other than to be measured and check on dialiation which doesn't happen until the third trimester. If she is healthy there really isn't a reason to see a doctor after a pregnancy has been diagnosed.

It is neglectful, but would it ever be considered that legally? I doubt it...as it is her body and she can do whatever she wants. She's a lazy a*s*s though, and if her kid is born with problems, it's her fault. Although I get the impression that people who refuse prenatal care and their children are born with problems, really won't give a sh*t.

Pregnancy is not really a medical illness. It's normal and as long as she eats properly and has no apparent complications, she is fine. Is she low income? If I hadn't had insurance, I may not have gone to a doctor until it was time either. Even then, I may have found a midwife to deliver the baby instead, if there were no complications expected.
Best Wishes,
Sue

I think it's neglect. Does she at least make sure her child goes to all his well child check ups? Prenatal is essentially the same thing.

I think it is neglect if the first apt. is later than 10 weeks gestation, unless the woman somehow was unaware she was pregnant.
