I mean, the book said he was similar to Voldemort in the sense that they were both half-blood... But he wasn't was he?
Voldemort was. His mum was a Squib, and his dad a muggle. So it doesn't make sense to me...

A "pure-blood" is someone born into a magical family where all members of that family are magical beings and not muggles. The Malfoy family, The Black family, and the Weasley family are all example of "Pure-Bloods" and many of these families are heavily intermarried and related to each other, as Sirius Black had explained to Harry in the Order of the Pheonix.

Squibs are individuals that are from magical families and are technically a "pure-blood", but they have no magical abilities. The Hogwarts Caretaker, Argus Filtch, is a prime example. For most of his life the Longbottom family though Neville was a Squib and that he would never get into Hogwarts.

The exact opposite of a Squib is the Muggle-Born Wizard/Witch. These are the "Mud-Bloods" that no-so-nice wizarding folk refer to. These individuals have magical abilities even though their family are all muggles without. Hermione Granger is the prime example of a Muggle-Born Witch. She has magical abilities, but her parents are both muggles and (it is assumed) so is the rest of her family.

The majority of wizarding folk are "mixed-blood" that Hagrid had eluded to. Anyone that has at least one person in their liniage (parent, grandparent, greatgrandparent, etc.) from a "pure-blood" family are considered "mixed-blood", which are still considered "mud-bloods" by people like the Malfoys. Harry Potter, Seamus Finnigan, Justin Finch-Fletchley, Tom Marvolo Riddle (Voldamort) are all "mixed-blood" individuals.

Harry is a "mixed-blood" (technically a Half-blood) wizard. Lily Evans (Lily Potter) was a muggle-born witch and James Potter was a Pure-blood.

Harry's father came from a pure blood wizarding family. Harry's mother is from a muggle family. As for her being a squib you're incorrect. Harry's elderly neighbor is a squib. So is Fergus the cranky caretaker at the school. Scrub's have a knowledge of magic and a place in the wizard world but can't really do much in terms of magic.
It was said several times in the books that Lily Potter was a gifted witch.
Voldemort and Harry are both half-bloods. Harry accepts his heritage and embraces it, he's proud of who he is.
Voldemort sees his muggle side as somehow defective. One theory is that he felt abandoned by his father and blamed him for the death of his mother. This had caused him to have his extreme hatred for muggles.
It's an interesting social theory as well. People often hate that which they secretly are. Alot of times the people we don't like somehow remind us whether on a conscious or unconscious level of things we don't like about ourselves.

As has already been pointed out, Lily Potter was a wizard born into a muggle family, so Harry is not a so-called 'pure-blood'. (According to Hagrid, there aren't really any 'pure-blood' families anymore, anyway.) That said, Voldemort's mother wasn't a Squib; unlike Filch, she could do magic. She was just so nervous in her father's presence that she could not do magic very well. She did well enough after her father went to Azkaban to brew a love potion to trap Tom Riddle, Sr., after all. However, after she told him the truth and he left her, she gave up magic of her own free will, and wouldn't even use it to save her own life.

a squip is still a pureblood though, given Merope's family history.

Lily was a muggle when she went into Hogwarts so Harry is like, first generation pureblood because of though Lily is a witch, her parents are still muggles. i thought it was like, Lily just so happened to know magic - a lot of it. she is just like Hermione.

thats how i see it.

Harry's mom, though a witch, was muggle born. (Remember Aunt Petunia's reactions to her sister's being chosen in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone).

His mom was fully human (like Hermione) but attended Hogwarts. His dad had wizard blood. So, he is 1/2 muggle.

well no his mother isn't a pureblood. like hermione for example, , she's a witch at hogwarts but malfoey still makes fun of her for being a pure-blood. so i guess it depends on your family background, and harry's mom was not from a wizard family, making harry a half-blood.

harry's mum was muggle born (remember her sister petunia is a muggel) so i guess that makes him half-blood.
